STOA Competitive Speech & Debate Club

The goal of education is not to fill a bucket, but to light a fire — and nothing ignites a student like standing before an audience, making their case.

Fridays  •  2:00 – 3:30 PM
Year-long course  •  Ages 12–18 (8th – 12th grade)

About the Course

     This year-long course is targeted toward 8th through 12th grade students. Mature younger students are welcome on a case-by-case basis, pending instructor approval. Students will study the basics of case writing and argumentation, progressing through higher techniques for debate and speech training.

Class Goals

  • Learn the format for argumentation and probe each aspect
  • Role play and conduct mock trial debates
  • Incorporate higher levels of speech training
  • Study opponents’ arguments and learn how to refute them
  • Prepare for tournaments where knowledge is put to the test

Speech Training Sessions Included

We will focus on the basics to advanced levels of Speech Delivery and persuasion across various styles of speaking. This year-long course is designed for 12–18 year olds.
